Skeppshult Transfers to 100% Wind Power.

Deeply entrenched in Skeppshult’s philosophy on producing quality bicycles is a commitment to reducing the impact their factory has on the environment.  From February 2008 Skeppshult changed over to electricity sourced completely from the wind. This latest change comes after a long list of initiatives which surely makes Skeppshult the world's most environmentally friendly bicycle manufacture.

"The latest step to use wind generated power is just a natural progression for us” says co owner Kjell Sture.”I think Swedish people in general have a natural affinity with nature. In spring time we pick flowers from the forest, in summer we go camping and pick wild berries from the forest, in autumn we pick mushrooms from the forest and in winter we go skiing in the forest and ice skating on the lakes. Our factory is located in the forests of Småland, not in an industrial complex in a city so when we go to work every day, we don’t feel removed from nature like you can sometimes feel working in a city. If we don’t do our best to help the environment, what will we have left? We even have a model called the Natur so how we affect the environment is not something we think about superficially, it’s much deeper in our way of thinking. ”

In 1999 Skeppshult changed over to a powder coating facility for painting frames and is one of Sweden’s “cleanest” facilities. The change over meant not only a significant reduction in pollution but also eliminated many toxic chemicals that were previously used. It also saw a reduction in the amount of water needed.

In 2005 Skeppshult changed over to more efficient natural gas to heat their facilities. When they made this conversion they also made some upgrades so that they could reuse the heat generated by the ovens for their powder coating facility to heat the factory as well.
